Kasey was on his knees in the garden bed, a cluster of baby plants and pots surrounding him like a tiny, unimpressive cage. It was hard to keep some plants growing healthily in Montana, what with its climate and all. The range of plants he had at his disposal had been startling at first since he recognized so few of them. Eventually after a great deal of research, probably a lot more than was necessary, he'd decided on hollyhock and canterbury bells for the front gardens. He'd opted to spend his day off planting them. What else was he going to do with free time? Wallow in his room most likely, and the idea seemed both unappealing and unavoidable.
The ex-medic's wings were out, as they often were when he had a choice in the matter. The sixteen foot appendages crested the air above him, dipping and stretching gently as Kasey worked. He'd opted to leave his earphones at home, a little traumatized after his last experience with Ms Da Costa. He had to admit, it was soothing to work to the sounds of birdsong and rustling leaves instead of blaring music for a change. He'd forgotten how beautiful it could be to simply sit and listen. Rocking back on his heels, Kasey wondered why he had even started wearing headphones while working to begin with.
Then a voice invaded his eardrums and he remembered. Right, people. Dusting the dirt off his palms, Kasey quickly looked around, though his view was mostly blocked by his own wings. Unfortunately it didn't keep him from seeing Marcus Foster walking his way. Kasey quickly dropped his gaze back to the dirt and shoved another hollyhock into a hole. He didn't know if Marcus even knew he had a job at Bellefonte; he'd certainly put a lot of effort into avoiding his old buddy during the month since he'd been hired. He could only hope Marcus wouldn't notice him - fat chance with giant wings in the air! - and keep on walking as if they definitely didn't know each other. A confrontation was the last thing he wanted, and a happy reunion, the last thing he felt he deserved.
