Kentaro had a terrible case of homesickness. He could take people speaking only English around him, even if certain accents or choices of words confused him. He could take the lack of Japanese movies and music. Internet was here to provide him with that. What he missed was more visceral. He wanted Japanese food. In here, that meant sushi and sashimi. It was as though all Japanese ate in their eyes was raw fish with bowls of rice. Even their curry didn’t taste the same. Oh, sure, he could find some ramen noodles but that was not enough. He wanted some traditional meal, just like he ate back home. When the desire for an okonomiyaki, a pancake-like meal, took him, he couldn’t chase it off his mind. Then he realised that most of the ingredients were very easy to find. Flour, eggs, cabbage, broth, seafood, mayonnaise and cheese, that was easy to find. A quick, but not so quick because he got lost along the way, stop at a grocery store and he was ready.
He was not asking for the cooks at the Academy to make it for him. They wouldn’t know how and wouldn’t like the extra work. Instead, he used the kitchenette in the dorm.
It might be important to say Kentaro wasn’t exactly a great cook. He could make simple meals without too much problems, but he also burned stuff easily. So, naturally, he had to burn a bit of the seafood he used. And the batter stuck to the grill. He didn’t think there was a lot of smoke but there was some still, and the typical smell of something burning, so Kentaro ended up opening the windows to chase it all away. He didn’t care about the smoke or the smell however, he had his okonomiyaki. Quite happy, and a little proud of himself, he transferred it to a plate and sat at the table with a cold beer. “Itadakimasu!” he exclaimed out loud even if there was no one to say it too, just out of nostalgia, before he started digging in. Oh, the taste! He had been craving for that, he could almost cry.
