As his head emerged, Zach took a deep breath. It barely lasted a second before he was back underwater and hit the pool wall with his feet to propel himself forward. The sounds of the other people around in the other corridors or on the other parts of the pool were muffled around him, he could almost pretend he was alone. This left plenty of room for his thoughts. While the noise of kids playing was barely perceptible, the voice of his mother rang quite clearly to his ears. The woman probably thought the conversation went well. She has always been a strange mix between a hippie and a tyrant. At least with a phone call he could cut short more easily and get away from her. But now that he his sense of hearing was impaired by the water, it was as if his brain chose to fill this silence with his mother’s voice. And it was worse.
Zach picked up the pace. He couldn’t outrun his train of thoughts but he could still try. He focused on his movements, on his breath. He wasn’t sure just how many laps he did so far. Normally he tried to keep count. Today however, he didn’t come here for training, he did to chase the frustration away.
He reached the wall again and stopped this time. A hand placed against the border to hold himself, he pulled the goggles off his eyes, moved them up. He didn't realise he was out of breath. He stayed there, still, for a minute maybe before he swam towards the nearest ladder and got out of the pool. He was hearing the kids playing now. A lot of people were there today.
Zach took his goggles and cap off. He put a hand in his wet hair and pulled it away from his face. He walked towards where he placed his towel and saw someone sitting right next to it. “Excuse me,” he said as he neared them. “Excuse me,” he repeated to get their attention. He then pointed at the towel on the bench.
