Violet Kanna Kurosawa
FACE CLAIM: Fernanda Ly.
♦ THE BASICS ♦
AGE: 16 (March 27th, 2000)
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Demiromantic homosexual
POSITION: Student at Bellefonte Academy♦ THE ABILITY ♦
POWER: Umbrakinesis
Violet can control darkness, manipulating and bending it to her will. She does this by controlling photons in the air, and causing them to absorb more or less light than usual with only her mind. This can result in an aura of darkness surrounding a person, either partially or completely blinding them for a temporary amount of time. She can also move shadows, and darken her skin to camouflage herself in the dark.
LIMITATIONS:
Violet’s powers cannot work without light, and cannot work without shadows. This makes it difficult, since Violet is extremely light sensitive as explained later on. Plus, the powers have a distance limitation of around ten feet, meaning anything further than that is not in her control. Another thing is that when there are no shadows, there is nothing to manipulate, thus rendering her powers moot, at best. This typically happens most often at noon, due to the sun being directly overhead.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
- Since the discovery of her powers, Violet has become much of a loner, more so that she was before. She rarely leaves her own room, but to eat in the middle of the night because of her newfound nocturnal sleep habits. Speaking of which...
- Due to these powers, Violet finds herself having trouble going out during the day, or even staying inside because of her newfound sensitivity to light. This usually resulting in migraines, and thus, she must wear sunglasses, even inside.
- Violet now has a dark aura that surrounds her at all times, due to the fact that her body now absorbs more light than a normal person’s. This results in her being easily noticed in a crowd. Wearing a hoodie helps, but for the most part, this is more of a curse than a blessing.
- Violet also now tends to get sunburn more easily, now that she is so accustomed to the dark. This causes her to need some ointment if she ever goes out without something covered, thus forcing her to compensate with more baggy clothes, even on the warmest of days.
- Violet can also be easily corruptible, due to her dark nature. She doesn’t want to hurt people, but inside her, there is anger, and if someone can tap into it, then who knows what could happen?
♦ THE FREEFORM ♦
The day had started like any other, with Violet contemplating skipping another day of school. She didn’t care to be surrounded by a bunch of idiots for eight hours a day, every day. The only person she truly cared about was Tammy, the slightly chubby girl who she, surprisingly, cared enough to call her her friend. That was the main reason for her to wake up at seven in the morning, and head off in the cold December snow that filled the areas that the snowplows either wouldn’t do, or couldn’t get to, walking along with Tammy, as she pulled out a small pack of cigarettes that she had mooched from Tobias.
“Oh, but Violet, aren’t cigarettes bad for your health,” she asked, a slight accent coming from the younger girl. Only a year younger, but they were one grade apart, so it wasn’t too weird. “You said you were going to quit,” she continued, her soft but noticeable Chinese accent coming through with a worried tint to it as she went to grab the cigarette box with some hesitation.
“Yeah? Guess I lied,” she said, before pulling out a lighter, flicking it open, and lit the small tobacco filled roll of paper in her hand. She inhaled the smoke, letting it burn in her lungs, before releasing it into the cold, crisp air of the city. “Almost New Year’s, Tam. You gonna do anything special this year?”
“Me? No, probably not. My family really wants to stay in this time. Maybe we could hang out, though?” Poor Tammy. She always wanted a friend, and Violet considered her one, to herself. But… Tammy was more of a sidekick than an actual friend. Did it make Violet feel bad? A bit, but sometimes, you just had to have someone to bounce witty retorts off of.
“I’m not sure. I guess I could check, though,” she said, after another long silence filled with smoke and tobacco. She usually got her fix from another kid in school, Tobias, who was way weirder than anyone Violet would willingly hang out with. However, if he had free drugs, then she would play nice, and talk about him behind their back. That was when she noticed that Tobias seemed to be a little more… strange, today. Almost like he was high?
A grimace came across her face, as she led the other to the bathroom. “We can probably smoke in the lavatory.”
“Why do you always call it the lavatory,” Tammy asked, a chuckle escaping her as she was led away from the crowd of dipshits, before a frown formed when she saw that Violet was angry.
“Cuz whatever, that’s why.”
As soon as they got the the bathroom, though, the lights began hurting Violet’s eyes. “Ah, what the Hell,” she asked rhetorically as she held her head in her hands. “Dammit, that hurts.”
“What? Violet, are you alright?”
“Y-yeah,” Violet said, putting on a small smile as she straightened herself back up. “Just a migraine, that’s all.”
“Dammit, Tobias is such a weirdo,” she muttered to herself, the shadows on the bathroom wall slowly becoming wider, stretching into weird shapes. “He’s bound to get caught, if he keeps being sloppy like this. Getting high at school? You can practically smell the weed off of him!” An inhale of smoke, an outhale of more smoke. Calm yourself, Violet. It wasn’t that big of deal, except that it was. It was a big deal. Tobias was the only one who would actually hook her up, and if he were caught doing weed, then it would only make sense that his buyers would come as a close second.
“Violet? Violet, what’s going on,” Tammy asked, fear in her voice as she put a hand on Violet’s arm and looked at the swirling shadows and darkness that emanated from the young girl, until…
-Crack-
“Shit!” The bulb broke, throwing both girls into darkness, which scared Tammy to the point where she ran out of there, leaving Violet all alone, to deal with what had just happened “Tammy! Tammy, wait,” she called out, but by that point, Tammy was gone. Would they still be friends? Hopefully.
Probably not.

Violet had run home, not caring that school was still in session. She couldn’t care less about being surrounded by morons on a daily basis, let alone today. Today was… weird. And strange, and she wasn’t going to deal with it.
She slowed down as she reached her apartment complex, looking behind her to see if anyone had noticed or followed her, before making her way up the stairs inside, and to her apartment. Dammit, what was going on? One second, everything had been normal, and then the next… Darkness surrounded her, and she had done… What had she done? What was that? The lightbulb had broken, for one, and there were shadows, and the shadows were moving as if they were alive.
For the first time in a while, Violet sank down the door, and cried. She was scared, and though she would never admit it, she wanted Tammy to be by her side. Poor girl was probably scared to death, thinking her friend was some sort of demon, or something. The thought made her laugh. Violet, a demon? Would make sense. She was pretty rebellious, didn’t care much for rules or God, for that matter. Didn’t listen, didn’t pray, bullied others…
What if she was a demon? Shit. That might’ve been cool, had it not happened at school, and if Tammy were still there, with her.
She wiped her eyes with a small chuckle, before getting up to make some lunch. “No, that would be ridiculous.”

The call had come a little while later, once her parents were home. Her mother, Aki Kurosawa, didn’t have english as her first language, and neither did her father, but the person on the other end seemed to know somehow. Or, at least, seemed to know that her parents preferred to speak in Japanese. Her father and mother crowded around the phone, before looking to Violet for tension filled moment. Then, their focus fell on the phone again. Probably the school, but her parents never cared this much about. It kind of annoyed her when they didn’t tell her anything afterward, just that she wouldn’t be going to school for a little while, and to not worry about it.
That was the end of the discussion, and her parents moved to their room to discuss something that Violet knew was about her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A week passed, with Violet rarely leaving her room. When her parents tried to coax her out for dinner, she would refuse on the grounds that she had a headache. And it was true. Her head hurt as if it were being split open, and the only way to stop it was to close the drapes, turn off the lights, and just try to avoid any and all light. It was so fucked, that she couldn’t go out anymore. Maybe it was withdrawl? She hadn’t smoked since the day of the incident, as she referred to it as.
A knock at the door. "Not hungry," she murmured again. A lie, they both knew, but it didn't matter. She would eat later.
"We're not here to bring you food," a noticeably masculine voice called from behind the door. Definitely not her father, or her mother, though that would have been obvious. Soon, the door was pushed open, and the pastel pink haired girl covered her eyes in the light. Dammit, she should've gotten sunglasses. Maybe she could have her parents order some online.
“Who are you,” she asked, eyes squinting to see who the figures were through the blinding light, which really, was just a hallway lamp, dim enough that she could see a man and a woman, both wearing dark suits.
“Violet Kurosawa?”
“I asked a question, and I demand a response. Who are you?”
“Hey now, we’re not here to hurt you,” The lady replied, holding back her muscular friend. “My name is Daphne, and this is Mack. We’re here to take you to a better place.”
“If you mean one of those stupid therapy camps, thanks but no thanks. I’m not interested,” she said, before rolling over in her bed to face away from the people who had just entered her room.
Mack, who she assumed was the man because she wouldn’t believe that a man would be called Daphne, chuckled softly. “We’re not here to take you to one of those stupid camps, kid. This place is a thousand times better than that.”
“And where would that be?”
“Daph, would you care to explain,” Mack asked, looking to the woman.
“Very well. We are from a place called the Bellefonte Academy, located in Kalispell, Montana. We train teenagers with special… er, ‘gifts’ to control their powers.”
That piqued Violet’s curiosity, as she sat up, turning back to them. “Oh?”
“Yes, but we’ll only take you if you choose to go. If not, then I’m afraid we’ll have to settle for more violent measures,” Daphne said, pushing her glasses up and holding out a hand that held sunglasses in it. “So, what do you say?”
Violet looked towards the hand that was held out towards her, and slowly, reached for it, taking the sunglasses into her own and walking out of the dark room after applying them.♦ THE PLAYER ♦
