Kenneth/Kathryn/King Coleman
better known as "Asylum"
FACE CLAIM: Michael B. Jordan
♦ THE BASICS ♦
AGE: 25
GENDER: Genderfluid; uses 'he' as Kenneth and King, 'she' as Kathryn; 100% okay with 'they'
ORIENTATION: Technically bisexual; Kenneth is straight, Kathryn is “straight” (interested in men), King is bisexual
POSITION: College student♦ THE ABILITY ♦
POWER:
Asylum has the ability to animate inanimate objects. By placing a part of themself in an object, Asylum can control an object like a puppetmaster. These objects, however, tends to possess new properties that may not have existed before. For instance, when animating toys, Asylum can essentially give the toy the ability to reshape itself -- within reason. The best example of this is allowing toys to move their mouths despite being hardened plastic. Similarly, when animating light posts, Asylum can bend it in various positions and then return it to an almost-unaltered state. In addition to this, Asylum can project a voice from the object. It always sounds like themself, though.
LIMITATIONS:
Asylum must be able to see the objects they want to animate. And, while the newly animated objects can leave their line of sight, the objects can’t be too far from them. Currently the limit of their control seems to be about one mile.
Asylum can not animate too many objects at once. In fact, they are limited to two. The personalities in Asylum possess an object. On rare occasions, they can animate up to three (meaning none of the three personalities are in control of the body), but it would leave their body helpless until someone took control. It’s unclear if Kenneth did not possess these personalities would this limit would be imposed.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
It’s unknown if this is a side effect of Asylum’s power, but Asylum has three different personalities: Kenneth, King, and Kathryn. And due to their abilities, the other two non-dominant personalities are always present in the form of an animated object. They call these states “alive” (when an animated object), “in control” (when they have control of the body), and “dormant” (when they happen to be suppressed).
When alive, they tend to possess a unique item they always have on them: Kenneth possesses a turtle ring, King possesses a metallic snake arm band, and Kathryn possesses a mermaid armband.
Asylum is very indecisive and scattered, considering there are three different personalities in control. King is the most strong willed, hard headed, with a bad boy vibe, while Kenneth is the most passive. Kathryn is showy, flamboyant, extroverted, and loves attention, while the boys tend to do things quietly and by themself. Kenneth has an almost child-like personality sometimes while King acts the oldest (despite technically being the youngest). Kathryn seems to be the most mature, though.
Asylum has a hard time with memory. The personalities don’t share one cohesive block of memory, so they have to tell each other things. They can do this mentally, but it must be done consciously. Similarly, just because one personality can do something (fight, for instance) doesn’t mean the others can. There is some muscle memory for certain things, but in order to perform the action well, they would need to let the personality who knows how to do the thing take control.
Only the one in control needs to sleep, based on their body’s tiredness. The other two can roam around, though they tend to stay close to their body. Often times they will go dormant until the one in control wakes up. Speaking of sleeping, Asylum tends to get tired more quickly than most people. This is due to their power essentially being on 24/7. They typically need a minimum of nine hours every night in order to be fully functional. When they are sleep deprived (anything less than 7 on a good day), personalities tend to go dormant sporadically to conserve energy.♦ THE FREEFORM ♦
Dr. Oswald shuffled some papers around, trying to get his office in pristine condition before his 4 o’clock meeting. They were coming. It was a monthly thing, happening ever since they arrived at Bellefonte all those years ago. He looked around for his file on them. How long had it been exactly? They arrived in February of 2006, and had been seeing a therapist ever since. He’d only been put on their case recently, so he was unfamiliar with all the details. But he knew the important ones: they were a handful.
They were early. A knock at the door alerted him and he stood up to answer it. He wondered how the session would go today. In walked what appeared to be a tall man, dark brown skin. But the earrings told him a different thing. Only one of them wore earrings. “Good afternoon, Kathryn,” he said, a hand waving to an open chair.
“Why thank you, Dr. Oswald,” the other said, smiling. The voice was male, but higher pitched. They sat down in the offered chair and crossed their legs. “I see you finally figured out who’s who. Most just call us Asylum.”
The Doctor chuckled softly and took his seat across from them, leaning back. “I’ve had you all for two months now. I would hope I can tell who’s who at some point. So, how have you all been today?”
“We’ve been fine, I think. King was a whore last night, though.”
“Excuse you. Those two wanted it, and I provided.” The snake head of the metal armband around ‘Kathryn’s’ wrist moved a bit.
“Oh whatever. Poor little Kenneth had to go dormant.”
“It was with a girl and a guy. At the same time,” the small turtle ring on their finger moved a bit, and a voice emerged from it.
“I’m going to need for you to get comfortable with it. Literally half of us likes guys,” the snake band spoke again. This voice was deeper, very masculine.
The turtle’s voice sounded a bit younger. However, one could tell that all three voices were definitely the same. “Whatever.”
Dr. Oswald chuckled, then cleared his throat to get their attention. “Well, the anniversary of you all coming to Bellefonte is approaching. Any thoughts you want to discuss today?”
They were quiet. They fidgeted with the mermaid armband around their wrist for a bit, looking away. The turtle spoke. “I miss them.”
“Have you had any luck remembering what happened, Kenneth?” Dr. Oswald asked.
“No. All I remember is waking up here at Bellefonte.”
“I was in control for two weeks after what happened,” they said. “I think I’m still the only one who remembers.”
“And you’ve yet to share the details with the others? How come?”
“The entire reason King and I are here is because Kenneth couldn’t deal with it,” they said, almost angry. “I could tell King, but this is my burden to bear.”
“Sis, I don’t understand why you think you have to go at it alone,” the snake said, circling around their wrist a few times but ultimately ending up in the same spot. The head was raised, though, staring directly at their face.
“I know, but…” They stopped and sighed. “Let’s move on.”
Dr. Oswald nodded, taking a mental note. “Those weeks you were in control. What happened? How did you end up at Bellefonte?”
“I… We were lost and scared, and had nowhere to go. I ended up stealing some food and getting caught. In the cell, that’s when I met King.”
“All I remember is waking up in a jail cell,” the snake began, “and had to get out. There were some keys that we needed and I just wanted them to walk right over to me.”
“I suddenly found myself inside the keys,” they said. “I was even more confused. One minute I’m in a cell, I black out, and the next I’m keys. I struggled a bit, but managed to get myself to King.”
“I didn’t even question it, honestly. I felt like I had known Kathryn my entire life… which technically isn’t a lie, considering she came first.”
“We left with King in control. I stayed as the keys because I didn’t want to black out again.”
“Needless to say,” the snake said, “we got locked up again. And this time, the recruiters were waiting for us. They were nice…,” he trailed off.
“We were kind of happy to go, honestly,” they said, smiling. “There was a home that we could stay at without all the worries. It was warm, and they made us feel safe.”
“I guess because they felt safe enough, I woke up,” the turtle said softly. “I woke up in control, and Kathryn and King were keys and a shoe. I freaked out and wanted to go home to my par--” He stopped. “But… they told me I couldn’t… and Kat told me something happened… and that this was our home now.”
They kissed the turtle ring on their right hand gently before placing that hand on an armrest. “We try not to talk about that time. We’d rather live in the present.”
“You live a little too much in the present,” the snake said. The turtle laughed.
“I’m glad to hear that.” Doctor Oswald smiled and continued the session.♦ THE PLAYER ♦
