Fern Autumn Abbot
FACE CLAIM: Ella Purnell.
♦ THE BASICS ♦
AGE: 19.
GENDER: Female.
ORIENTATION: Heterosexual.
POSITION: Bellefonte Student.♦ THE ABILITY ♦
POWER: Reactive Power Mimicry
In theory, Fern's ability allows her to mimic another mutant's ability. However, since abilities come from a source of a mutated gene, her immune system sees the mimicked abilities as a threat and therefore constantly tries to reject it.
Her ability is constantly active (hence; reactive), though that doesn't necessarily mean she always mimics a nearby power. In most cases, contact is necessarily in order for her to mimic someone's power, but this can also happen when people are in close proximity to her (A 10 meter radius). Imagine her chance at mimicking a power being like Russian Roulette and mimicking a power is the bullet, but when touching others, there's three bullets instead of one.
Her chances of successfully mimicking a power where her body doesn't try to reject it is a slim 10% chance, which means that nine out of ten times, her body will actively try to reject the power, thus causing her immune system to work overtime and eventually, go into overdrive mode and weaken over time.
When successfully mimicking a power, it works like any other power mimic. The mimic itself is always temporary and usually doesn't last longer than thirty to sixty minutes.
LIMITATIONS:
- On top of her weakening immune system, Fern also mimics the side-effects of the ability she mimics, regardless of whether or not the mimic is successful. The side-effects last for as long as she would normally mimic a power (thirty to sixty minutes).
- If she successfully mimics a power, she also mimics their level of "strength" and "control". She cannot be stronger or weaker, or handle the power better. She also mimics the limitations. She's also limited to successfully mimicking one power at a time, unless the one she mimics has two powers.
- She is not able to sense the presence of mutant powers.
- She's limited to distance and touch; Usually, she has a bigger chance at mimicking a power when physically touching someone, though can mimic powers in a ten meter radius.
- Because her power is reactive, she is not capable of turning it off or on, nor is she currently able to decide whether or not she does actually mimic a power or not. It simply happens and is completely out of her control.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
- Weakened immune system that weakens further over time.
- She mimics the side-effects of the powers she mimics.
- Intense nausea, headaches/migraines, feeling sickly and weak. Gets sick easily.
- Paleness and warm to the touch; often feverish.
- Higher chance of getting infections.
♦ THE CHARACTER ♦
HEIGHT: 5'3.
HAIR COLOR: Dark brown.
EYE COLOR: Dark brown.
MISC: Has a tattoo on her wrist that says "still I rise".
PERSONALITY: Fern is very open-minded and free-spirited. She's kind and gentle, even to the point of naivety. She has a very big heart that allows her to trust easily, care deeply and love unconditionally. However, with also comes a paranoid notion to never be a burden to anyone. She will give you her whole heart, but ask for nothing in return. This makes her an easy target for manipulation and control.
Intelligent, but not shy, Fern still doesn't mind allowing someone to take her spotlight. Often appearing as weak, sickly and fragile, Fern still tries her best to remain positive and hopeful. She's the kind of person who dances and sings like no one is watching and enjoys life to the fullest.
However, with it also comes anxiety and depression - which she keeps hidden behind a facade of smiles and laughs. She has weekly sessions with her therapist and takes medication.
Fern is very romantic and tries to romanticize everything in life. She enjoys finding beauty where others don't look. She dreams of becoming a world famous author or photographer, both of which she spends many hours of her free time doing.
SECRET(S): Her power is slowly killing her and as you can imagine, it's not exactly the kind of conversation one has over breakfast. She tries not to tell anyone about it, partly because she doesn't want to be a burden, but also because she doesn't want anyone to think of her that way. She doesn't want to be "the girl that likely will die before her life even begins".
Another thing she will never admit to anyone is her fear of death.♦ THE HISTORY ♦
Fern was born in Oxford, England along with two sisters. To Fern, at least, her family life was fairly normal. Albeit closer to her mother, she had a good relationship with her father. She sometimes wondered if her father was ever resentful about not having any boys, though, he never made any apparent moves to prove her childlike curiosity right.
She grew interested in the world of creativity at an early age and was often caught "lending" her mother's camera or scribbling down wondrous stories in notebooks.
Being a gentle soul, Fern didn't stand out much in school. She made a few friends, sure, but she wasn't exactly the kind of person who made herself noticeable. But she didn't mind. She was far too carefree to think she was really missing out on much.
Fern was thirteen when she first manifested her ability. She was at the store, talking to an old lady Fern had seen there many times before. The old lady had always been nice to her and Fern enjoyed being around her and listening to her many stories about her youth. However, as Fern was helping the old lady carry her bags outside, she was suddenly caught by a wave of intense nausea. Dropping the bags to the ground, she heaved over, clutching her stomach as the world started spinning around her.
Waking up in her doctor's office, she was told she had passed out and bumped her head, earning a light concussion. The doctor did some tests, but couldn't find anything immediately wrong. The same thing happened two days later, while Fern was at the mall with some of her friends. She tripped over her own shoes and a stranger caught a hold of her - and once again, she was hit with an intense wave of nausea - causing her once again to topple over.
The doctor did more test, yet still couldn't figure out what was happening to her. The next day, though, recruiters from St. Bethany showed up, saying that they had sensed the manifestation of a power - the same thing that had happened to her older sister, though, there was something off about it. They told her she had power mimicry, though, couldn't explain why she was getting sick.
She was brought to the academy then, being told to see the school's power expert. After various and tedious months of testing, she was told that her body, her immune system was constantly trying to reject the mutated gene that allowed her to have abilities, and as such, made her sick inside, tearing at her immune system.
As time passed, Fern became growing sick of being looked at as the girl who was sickly, fragile and weak. Either people ignored her and avoided her, or they treated her as if she was made of glass - offering kindness that never really felt genuine.
Because of how often she was sick, Fern ended up falling behind at school - missing classes turned into failing grades and failing grades turned into having to repeat her years. After a while, Fern decided that she needed a fresh point of view - somewhere else to set down her roots where she didn't have to worry about constantly being looked at like that girl.
And Bellefonte Academy became the answer.
Bellefonte offered the young girl a new chance. A new chance to be someone other than just the sick, fragile girl who could double over at any time. Of course, eventually, the same thing would happen at the new school, but it felt like a needed break.
As her condition worsened though, Fern started seeing the school therapist - monthly sessions turned into weekly sessions and she was prescribed medicine for her anxiety and crawling depression. Despite it all, though (at least outwardly), Fern pretended that it didn't bother her. That she was fine. That she could be happy. She simply refused to be the girl that everyone took pity on or feared getting close to.♦ THE PLAYER ♦
