"Alexandra, can you come down here, please?" The tone coming from downstairs was full of irritation. Alex could only imagine what it was about, she'd spent the past couple of hours in her room playing video games instead of homework. Earlier in the day, well, she'd skipped class and went to Game Stop to buy a new game that she'd been waiting months to get. Her parents would have no reason for knowing though, unless someone told them.
Someone like her little narc of a twin.
Alex humphed and paused her game, setting the controller on her bed. The fourteen year old rolled her eyes dramatically before shutting her bedroom door and stomping down the stairs to where her mother was waiting. Ashton was in the kitchen eating an apple. She glared at him and he stared back at her, the epitome of innocence...ha.
"Would you like to tell me where you were today?" Her mother knew. And she was ready to lunge across the kitchen to tackle her brother, but instead she gripped the railing of the stairs.
Alex narrowed her eyes at her mother and debated how much she actually knew. Maybe she'd throw Ashton under the bus and say that he'd given her the money for it. He was just too much of a coward to get it himself. "Who told you? Was it him?Can someone please explain to me how I got stuck with this little narc as a twin? As a brother, fine, that's understandable, but as my twin? Like, we shared the same fucking womb juice! How in the fuck do I come out like this and he comes out like....that. A fucking tattle-tail."
Ashton rolled his eyes when she flipped him off and her mother swatted her hand away. "Your brother didn't tell me anything! Your school called, asked if you were sick and why we didn't call you off. But because you want to put blame on your brother, swear like some trashy little wench and skip school, you're going to be punished. Understood?"
"Oh yes, please, Mom. Punish me. Take away my gaming system, make me go to school, tell me I'm not allowed to see Sophie anymore. I fucking dare you," Alex folded her arms across her chest in a challenging gesture. She knew her mother wasn't the disciplinary one. And they could only be so disciplinary with her when they had such a reputation to protect. Did they really want to keep her under this roof every day when she wasn't in school and was out with her friends? With all of their housewife friends and snobby rich assholes? They knew her better than that.
Her mother turned red in the face and pointed upstairs, "Room. Now."
Alex smirked and shrugged, "If you say so, Mummy dearest."
Nearly ten minutes passed before the door opened and in walked her twin. He was nervous, or maybe not, she couldn't quite tell. He was quiet as he stood in the doorway. Alex impatiently waited for him to talk, but continued her game. No point in pausing it when he wasn't even saying anything.
"Lex?" He started and she groaned and paused the game.
"What, nerd?"
Ash gulped and rubbed the back of his neck. Something was wrong, he usually got straight to the point because neither of them were keen on talking to each other more than they had to. When they were 'making up' it usually consisted of half-assed apologies and then it was forgotten. They'd had plenty of forced make-ups in their earlier days to keep them from staying too mad at each other.
"Ash?"
He pushed himself forward, closing the door behind him and came to sit next to her on the bed. Something was very, very wrong. "I'm going to be taken away," was all he said.
Alex snorted and rolled her eyes, "By the aliens that brought you here? Good. Maybe you'll fit in better with them."
Ashton looked down at his hands and found them trembling. She'd never seen him scared before. Awkward, yes, but never afraid. He was her twin, her rock. Even as much as she made everyone think she hated him, they were closer than anyone would have believed. And to see him so nervous made her stomach clench.
"Recruiters, Lex. From that school. I'm like them..."
Alex blanched and shook her head in disbelief. He was her twin. He couldn't be a mutant. If he was, wouldn't she have been? The only strange thing she'd been feeling was those volatile cramps when her lady parts decided to open up a can of rage because she didn't have a baby that month. It was unlikely that Ashton was feeling the same thing. "You're lying."
Five years later...
"Hey, have you talked to the She-devil lately?"
Snorting at her words, Ash looked at her and shook his head, "Are you kidding? What makes you think she's gonna talk to me? I'm the enemy, remember?" He sighed and folded his arms across his chest, "It's ironic, ya know, I always thought it would just be you that they couldn't stand."
Alex shoved her hand against her brother's face and laughed, "Shut up. Maybe if ya hadn't gone and gotten those weird ass superpowers, you'd still be their favorite." Not that not having the ability that her brother had had suddenly made her the favorite. "On the bright side of joining the dark side, we've got alcohol!" She waggled a beer bottle in front of his face and smiled.
He took the bottle from her and set it down on the bar, "You know you can get fired for that right? I'm still below the legal age, just like you are, Lex."
Rolling her eyes, she shrugged and kicked her legs that were dangling off the barstool. "How're things? With the ability and whatever?"
"Eh, still a bit hectic. Trying to get a substantial hold on it, but ya know, that's what college is for, right? How about you? You're not in jail, so I guess that's a plus."
"Fuck you," She said as a knee-jerk reaction before laughing and shrugging herself. "I mean, yeah, not in jail. Also not going to college, not dating anyone, over all having no life. I have work. And my looks and personality, that's about it."
Ash nodded, almost with a sad expression coloring his face. Like he was disappointed that she had nothing going on for her in her life. It wasn't like he could change her poor decisions though, nor did she ask for his pity.
Alex gave him a harsh look, "Stop. Stop doing that. I'm fine, Ash. I've got a job, a decent apartment with my best friend and a sort of, okay-ish brother. I'd say that's enough, ya know?"
He nudged her shoulder and laughed, "Okay, fine. But you know, if you need anything, you just gotta call right?"
"Gah, you sound so fucking sappy. Can we just not? It's implied, we don't have to talk about it."
"Fine. Implied. I gotta run to class though, I'll come visit you and Soph later though, k?" He shot her a smile before hopping off the barstool and slinging his bag over his shoulder. "Lovvvvveeee youuuuuu."
