POWER: Telepathy
Telepathy | noun |te·lep·a·thy |\tə-ˈle-pə-thē\ \a way of communicating thoughts directly from one person's mind to another person's mind without using words or signals. Derivative of the Ancient Greek words 'tele' (distant) and 'pathos' (feeling, perception, passion, affliction, experience). This term was first used in 1882 by Frederic W.H. Myers, a classical scholar and a founder of the Society for Psychical Research.
In a less literal, academic sense, Drew Conner is capable of lifting thoughts and memories of the individuals around him. Drew can, under certain circumstances, communicate telepathically but refrains from doing so.
Anything hiding beneath the conscious, 'surface' of an individuals mind are lifted in a similar manner as downloading an audio or video file. With a willing (or vulnerable) target, Drew is able to 'buffer' the mental 'files' being lifted, though, in most cases, he must wait until enough of the memory or thought is transferred into his own mind before it can be processed and analyzed. This allows Drew to retain access to the images that play through his mind much in the same fashion as a video playback even after the connection with a target has been severed, provided he was able to maintain the link long enough.
Due to the time and effort involved in 'downloading' more embedded, hidden thoughts and memories, the sometimes randomness of a person's surface thoughts are Drew's bread and butter. Strong or prevalent thoughts can usually be lifted with ease and are visualized in vivid images or gut feelings giving Drew the reputation for being a very intuitive individual, as opposed to being 'outed' as a telepath.
Communicating using this power is spotty, at best, in most cases. In order to project his own thoughts or memories into someone else, Drew must be intimately familiar with the intended target's mind. Because of this, the only person he's capable of consistently 'speaking' with, even from a distance, is his twin sister. At times he's been able of 'forcing' a thought or memory into an unfamiliar mind but more often than not it comes out disjointed and vague, at best. He's been known to be able to maintain a telepathic link with his sister over a distance of nearly 2 miles due to the many years of growing acclimated with one other's mental faculties. Anyone else, the limit of the communication aspect of Drew's power ranges from a few feet to those unfamiliar, to roughly 30 meters in those he's comfortable with.
LIMITATIONS:
- Drew must be in line of sight to his target and, with the exception of his sister, with whom he shares an exclusive link, must be within a 30 meter range.
- Other mental activity in the area can inhibit the 'download speed', or even the connection itself. Attempting to scan and read someone standing on the other side of a crowded room takes great effort and, depending on the overall circumstances and nature of the gathering, may be impossible even if the target is well within the 30 meter range limit.
- When attempting to make a mental connection with someone it's possible for stronger thoughts to interfere, causing the mental link to wander in the direction of the more powerful thoughts. This has resulted in confusion as Drew accidentally links with an unintended target and begins to scan through their surface thoughts.
- It takes a great deal of effort to be able to communicate with someone clearly and easily. To date, his twin is the only person he's managed to connect with on such a level where telepathic communication is nearly effortless and even that took a lifetime to create. Otherwise, the best he can hope is a disjointed sentence or muddled images.
- 'Downloading' a particularly detailed, powerful, or vivid memory could take upwards of a few minutes. Recognition of anything other than what is residing on the surface of someone's mind isn't instant and the longer a connection is active, the higher chance of interference.
- While memories that have been transferred can be studied and analyzed mentally even after the connection with the target has been severed, they begin to fade after roughly an hour, limiting the amount of information that can be gleaned. Within two hours only vague flashes of the memory remains.
- Empaths or those with exceptionally strong wills can sense the mental connection and, if applicable, can move to block it. Drew is highly susceptible to other telepaths in the sense that nearly any attempt to prevent his mental connection from lifting their thoughts results in a sort of telepathic backlash that causes his mind to glitch. Although this doesn't happen often it's an incredibly uncomfortable experience Drew has described as being 'hit by a flash grenade while being tasered'.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
- As with most telepaths, overuse of his power can result in physical maladies such as headaches, nose bleeds, vertigo, nausea and loss of consciousnesses.
- On occasion, Drew's mind has connected with someone unintentionally and begun to transfer random memories and thoughts. Aside from being increasingly distracted and uncomfortable, Drew is only able to willingly sever the connection without physically removing himself from the target's vicinity about half the time. Once a connection is made, Drew has no control over what gets lifted and, on rare instances, even his own thoughts or memories have been known to leak into the unwitting person.
- Because the mental faculty that facilitates the connection with others is almost constantly active, Drew is highly susceptible to having his own mind read since another telepath need only 'link' with an already open connection. Ironically enough, when 'linked' to another telepath he can communicate with them far more easily than usual.
- If his power isn't used regularly (at least once a week), Drew becomes very antsy and edgy. His mind wants to draw the images and thoughts from others to the point where it's an actual need. If his mental faculties aren't flexed and taken care of, his power has been known to go haywire resulting in jitters, bouts of hyperactivity, disjointed thoughts and lack of focus.
- By the same token, Drew's mind operates much in the way of a highly developed muscle. He is constantly in need of intellectual stimulation. Because of this, Drew is always studying, reading, or delving into one of his many 'professional' pursuits in order to keep his mind sharp and working properly.
- While an individual's surface thoughts and active memories can be read easily and discreetly, if Drew wished to dig any deeper than what a person is thinking at that moment it become apparent to the target something is awry. It's been reported that it feels as thought someone is 'tugging at their sub-conscious'. Those more in tune with mental powers (or telepaths themselves) will know exactly what thoughts and memories are being accessed and transferred.♦ THE FREEFORM ♦- The TV screen fades in to a pretty, yet approachable blonde woman sitting behind a news desk. A graphic byline pops up onto the bottom of the picture displaying the text 'Jennifer Lewis - AMZ News Anchor' -
"Welcome back to AMZ News. We're continuing our month long segment profiling the ten most eligible bachelors under thirty by going a little out of the norm for our fourth pick. AMZ New reporter Erin Alexander for more."- The screen flashes a brilliantly colored graphic featuring the number 4. A voice over cut through -
"Although the the least known selection on this list, Drew Conner comes in at number four. As the heir to the Conner family empire, Drew is in line to head an international corporate conglomerate worth."- Still images flash on screen of a dark haired, brown eyed young man stepping out of a small coffee shop, climbing into the back of a limousine, and walking along a busy street. Each shot finds the young man clad in a sharply tailored suit of some sort. -
"The twenty seven year old heir and his twin sister attended a prestigious private academy in Montana, USA at the age of fourteen before moving on to Stanford University where Drew ultimately earned his MBA. Aside from standing to inherit a controlling stake in of the largest corporate conglomerates in the country, sources close to the heir say he chooses to remain outside the spotlight, instead focusing on his position within his family's corporate management firm. His busy schedule has been cited as the main reason he's been linked to a number of young ladies around his Southern California residence."- Still images of the same dark haired young man in the company of a statuesque brunette girl, a pretty redhead, and a serious, but attractive blonde -
"But apparently none of them have managed to capture our number four's heart for long. Sources say the young executive has attempted to fade into the background of his corporate environment, choosing to advance based upon merit, rather than his family's name. He's humble, hard working, determined and in line to inherit a mega-corporation, what's more to love? It seems our number four selection is the complete package. For AMZ News, I'm Erin Alexander."
"I still don't understand."
The young woman's voice was terse, dripping with thinly veiled malice. Drew didn't lift his eyes up to his sister, rather opting to keep his attention on the glass of bourbon he held in one hand. It had been mere hours since he'd officially announced his resignation from Conner Holdings Inc., ending his professional connection to the family business. His parents had been reluctant to accept his decision, yet they knew better than oppose their son. Drew's sister, on the other hand, was less understanding.
"I'm not retiring." Drew replied, immediately regretting lifting his gaze long enough to glance up to his sister. "Look." Drew sighed, sitting up as he spoke. He'd been slouched in the chair of his posh Los Angeles home since the press conference and the glass of bourbon he was currently working on hadn't been his first. "Our father worked for seventeen different companies before the foundation of C.H.I.. That experience is what got him where he's at today. I just think it's time I stepped away and got a little of the same experience."
The skeptical look on his sister's face was all Drew needed to see she wasn't completely buying it. Her arms folded as she regarded him with nothing short of a harsh glare, silently demanding he continue justifying his abrupt and unexpected professional decisions. After all, opting to accept a consulting position with Bellefonte Academy located in a corporate wasteland like Montana didn't jive with his explanation.
"A new perspective." Drew answered. He didn't need to tap into his mutant ability to know the question. "Working with the next generation of business owners and corporate executives can be invaluable experience." He gave another shrug, pausing long enough to lift the glass to his lips and take a short drink. "Plus my status as a consultant isn't limiting. I can do whatever I want, network as needed and, I don't know, maybe do something on my own?"
A hint of emotion came out during the last part of his explanation. Drew exhaled slowly, his gaze now remaining locked upon his sister. Her expression softened in silent understanding. She may not have approved of her brother's decisions but she could, at least, accept there was more to it than he'd admitted at first. Slowly she nodded. "When do you leave?" She asked.
Drew had taken the pause in conversation to finish off his bourbon. "The movers are going to be here tomorrow."♦ THE PLAYER ♦
