Derek has the ability to shapeshift into any animal in the Canidae family, more commonly know as canines. This includes animals such as domestic dogs, wolves, foxes, jackals, dingoes, etc. The transformation process is not always a speedy or easy process and it is more often painful than not. The size of the canine he is transforming to determines how quickly he can change as well as how painful it is. However the experienced he becomes with shapeshifting the more tolerable of the pain he will become.
When in human form, some characteristics from his canine shapeshifting are sometimes present. There are times where his hearing and sense of smell are on par with a canine’s and he’s noticed this particular effect last longer and happens more frequently the older he gets and the more he shifts.
LIMITATIONS:
Derek is unable to speak in canine form, but he does hum consciousness does remain intact. Even though he is mentally human, his canine instincts are sometimes difficult to ignore and keep control over. It becomes more and more difficult to ignore his animalistic urges the more times he shifts in one day.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
Being able to transform at will into a canine comes with a hefty amount of side effects:
- After resuming human form, there are times where Derek will only be able to see in black and white.
- He may substitute a bark for a word when talking (highly embarrassing).
- He is more susceptible to fleas than most humans and mutants.
- He prefers his meat to be much rarer than the average person.
- Shapeshifting causes him to burn more calories than average, requiring him to eat more than normal.
- When his ability is overused he may be unable to shift to canine or human form (depends on the form he’s currently in).

MISC: Always treats himself to the most expensive clothing, and rarely wears the same outfit twice in the same two week period. Coming from a wealthy family and being pretty well behaved keeps the cash flowing from mom and dad. Even though the clothes he does wear are expensive, he tries to wear as little clothing as possible without it being considered indecent exposure. As for scars, has one small car on his left eyebrow, was on the receiving end his older brothers’ poorly executed pranks.
PERSONALITY:
Generally, Derek is a pretty laid back individual. This laid back attitude can often times be mistaken for arrogance or apathy. The reality is that Derek just often feels like he is several steps ahead of others around him in most situations. On the other hand, when it comes to the opposite sex or his older brother’s, Derek’s personality can do a complete 180 causing him to become timid and/or submissive. Derek is also very intuitive and reasonable causing him to understand things and put two and two together a little quicker than others his age. Derek doesn’t usually intentionally insult others’ intelligence, (unless you're one of his brothers) but he can be considered very tactless and sometimes has a hard time noticing when a sarcastic comment or a demeaning look hurts someone's feelings. This however does not make the tactless teenager anti-social, on the contrary Derek likes to be in the thick of things when it comes to his peers. He likes to know what's going on and likes to keeps tabs on certain aspects in people's lives that may benefit him later on down the road. Unfortunately as stated above, because he does feel like he’s several steps passed others, he will often times miss things that may play in his favor due to the fact that at the time he may have been feigning interest and was deep in thought about something else.
Derek isn’t one to seek out trouble or to purposely cause mayhem like the other Prince boys, at a young age he decided he didn’t fancy punishment as much as hos older brothers seem too. Instead Derek is good at doing what he’s told even if he does so grudgingly or if he does so with a sarcastic remark or a little bit of back talk. He enjoys the perks of behaving i.e. rarely grounded, no detention, ask for something and gets it, etc. The only time Derek might be found in a little trouble is if tactless insults an authority figure while trying to explain to them why he’s right about something and they aren't.
SECRET(S): Derek smokes, occasionally. No one, especially not his brothers, know this at all and he goes to great lengths to make sure it stays that way.♦ THE HISTORY ♦
Derek was only two years old when he and his family moved from England to the US, he doesn’t remember much about his hometown, but he still has a little of the British accent considering he still grew up around his family and learned to speak the same way they did. From a young age, Derek was watched like a hawk. He was expected to be a prankster and a troublemaker, and who could blame people for thinking that way with brothers like his. Eventually however as Derek got older it became clear that everyone’s attention was needed on the two older Prince brothers more than Derek’s. This resulted in Derek getting a little less attention than the others but he definitely got more praise and he always got what he asked for because by comparison, he was a golden child.
Although Derek never really followed his brothers’ footsteps or partook in their shenanigans, he still made sure to keep up with them, He did this to make sure he wasn’t left out when he was younger, but as he got older, he did it more so to either clean up their messes, get blamed for their messes (unintentional on his part) or have something to blackmail them with when needed. The latter of the the three was needed considering his brothers were both bigger than him and there were plenty of times when he annoyed the both of them.
When Derek reached his teen years, both his brothers had already started attending Bellefonte Academy. He knew he’d be headed then eventually but during the time he was home without them, he managed to become even more independent than he already was, he never had a probably establishing his own identity and was grateful for that. It was long after Derek’s fourteenth birthday however, that proved no matter how independent or unique he was, he still had one major thing in common with his family. He was a mutant.
Derek was close to home . finishing off his evening run, when he felt a sudden pain in his side. Now Derek was used to cramps and the feeling of stitches from running and swimming but this feeling was different from both of those sensations. He kept running though, he was sure whatever it was would pass, that is until he felt an intense sharp pain shoot through his entire body. This pain brought him to the ground. He was almost instantly drenched in sweat that had nothing to do with his run. He didn’t notice it at first but he was literally howling in pain before he blacked out. When Derek came to, he was back at home in bed. He had no idea where his clothes were or had he had gotten home. His parents knew that whatever happened to him must have been mutant related but by the time they had gotten to him he was human again. It was until the next day that A recruiter from Bellefonte Academy had shown up and explained what his power was.
The last three years at Bellefonte have been particularly interesting for Derek. He was once again back with his brothers and he had met many plenty of other mutants. Derek knew that others mutants existed but he had never witnessed this many together in one place. It was certainly a lot different than any human school. Derek has come a lot further in his academic career in the last three years than he has with his mutant ability. I mean, let’s face changing your body from one species to another was far more difficult than studying for midterms.♦ THE PLAYER ♦
