Penelope Marie Blaise
FACE CLAIM: Jenna Coleman
♦ THE BASICS ♦
AGE: Seventeen
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Uninterested but totally gay.
POSITION: Student♦ THE ABILITY ♦
POWER: Psychometry
Penelope has the ability to experience memories that are left behind in objects. When a person is in contact with an object - such as a book, or even their clothes - a memory is imprinted into it. Penelope's ability allows her to see the memory imprinted on these objects through the perspective of the person experiencing it. While a memory can last a few minutes, as she is seeing it, only a second of actual time passes from an outside perspective. If someone were watching her witness a memory, it would only look as if she had zoned out for a moment before snapping back to reality. The newer a memory, the stronger impression it leaves behind. However, an emotionally powerful memory could have a lasting impact on an object for Penelope to witness.
LIMITATIONS:
Memories only last for a few minutes; some the longest Penelope can experience last for around five minutes, and those are only for objects that have a particularly strong memory attached to them. She cannot use her psychometry on living creatures. Penelope also has no way to control what memory she experiences. There is no picking an choosing; whatever memory is newest or strongest is the one she sees.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
Because psychometry is a mental ability, one of the largest side-effects Penelope has is migraines. Overuse of her ability, willingly or not, can give her migraines that last for several hours. If Penelope tries to fight her ability, it often heightens her migraines, feeling like an immediate sharp pain in her head and it is not uncommon for her to be confused as to where she is after a memory. Because of her lack of control, emotions can get in the way of her psychometry. If she is feeling overwhelmed or strained, she has less control over what happens when she touches an object. Furthermore, Penelope has developed almost OCD-like symptoms as a result of her psychometry. Because she does not want to physically have to touch anything unnecessary, she has a compelling need to be organized. Knowing where everything is limits the amount of items she needs to touch when she needs anything.♦ THE FREEFORM ♦
She sits with better posture than I do - it's like her back isn't built to slouch. For a teenager, she carries herself with the power of an adult in charge. A boss. Her eyes look through me like I'm inferior. No, more like I'm not here at all. I was warned by a weary mother, but I had to believe she was exaggerating when we spoke on the phone to set up the appointment for her daughter.
"Hello, Penelope."
She raises her eyebrows, but she isn't curious. Complete and utter judgement; I feel it weighing down on me.
"Hello." Briefly, I am surprised that she responds at all, even if the single word echoes with a hallow nature. Perhaps this won't be as bad as I was made to believe.
"Where would you like to start?" Often, giving a client a choice puts them at ease. I can immediately see that this isn't the case here.
"By leaving."
I laugh. She doesn't. "Alright then, Penny. I--"
"Penelope." Her tone is threatening.
"Beg pardon?"
This seems to annoy her. She sighs like I'm a child that wont listen. "My name is Penelope." Ah. Not one for nicknames. I smile at her again, but it's clear charms don't work on a girl like this.
"Sorry, but as I was saying. I believe you know why you are here; your mother seems concerned. But I'd like to hear some of yours."
...Silence. She has no interest in speaking, and she looks past me again as if I hadn't spoken at all, either. I clear my throat to try and bring her back in the moment. "Or maybe you'd like to talk about your manifestation?"
"I have no interest in speaking about my psychometry in any regard." Oh, she sounds annoyed now. It's not a surprise to hear anger over a sensitive subject, after all. I make a scribble on my notepad, and she looks down the the motion of my pencil. "I know my mother has told you the story anyway."
She's right; I know the story. "It must have been hard to leave home when you were eleven years old." I look back up at her, and for a moment, I think she looks confused. "You only had a day to process everything before you had to move." She purses her lips, and I know we're getting somewhere. "You were at school?" A tactful question. I already know the details; they're on my notebook in front of me.
"At a public library." She corrects me and sighs. "I had picked up a book and saw myself as the librarian. I didn't understand what had happened until I was told I had to move to Montana."
"Do you like Montana?"
There isn't a sign of humor on her face, but I wonder if she considers laughing. "No, I do not."
"Have you made friends?" Her dark eyes narrow on me. "Boyfriends?"
"No."
"Would you have rather attended school in England?" Among those sensitive subjects, I was forewarned that the move to the United States was a sore spot for her, even after almost a decade. "I've heard you're not very social here. You don't do much other than focus on school, do you?"
"I'd rather not have to attend at all." She answers after a moment; I can't hide my confusion.
"Your psychometry is a gift, Penelope."
"You would not believe it to be if you were the one that possessed it."
That already cold tone took a turn for the worse. They say not to poke a bear, and here I am, prodding a dragon. "Is that why you're behind on your training?" That knowledge sparks a fire in her. She sits a little straighter, if it were possible. "You have straight As in all of your schooling. You could attend university in a great many of places, but you are still here, in Montana, because you haven't made any attempt to progress your ability." I am getting to her, and I'm sure I'm moments from a breakthrough of sorts. I can see it on her face. Therapy can take a great deal of many forms, and sometimes you do have to push to get where you need. "Are you afraid to leave here? Even if you hate it?"
She stands abruptly; "I would like to leave."♦ THE PLAYER ♦
