LYRA BLACKWALDE
FACE CLAIM: Lauren Bailey
♦ THE BASICS ♦
AGE: 29
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Heterosexual
POSITION: Librarian/Part-time Nurse♦ THE ABILITY ♦
POWER: Teleportation
Lyra has the ability to teleport herself or other objects/people within her line of sight a certain distance away. Her range roughly extends to about 500 meters away from herself; while that may be far it does come with limitations and complications.
LIMITATIONS:
Teleporting requires some degree of concentration and mental effort in order to work. It involves the displacement of molecules and atoms to another space, so that in itself can get tricky.
Despite the amount she's trained, Lyra has the most difficulty teleporting water or any fluid substance. If it's not contained within some form of vessel, it's far harder for her to get a bead on the molecules she has to shift. Gas of any kind is just as difficult, if not more so depending on its density. Both elements almost always need to be contained in something for her power to do anything.
While she can teleport anyone or anything roughly 500 meters away she must be familiar with the location she is sending someone or something to. If she cannot form a concrete or good visualization of where she's displacing an object, she runs the risk of placing that object within another object and meshing the molecules. For living beings, this can prove fatal.
Because this requires concentration Lyra must remain on task or risk her power not working or, worse off, working and displacing an object into another. Smaller objects don't require as much concentration to move, while larger or living objects require a bit more effort. Currently the most she's ever successfully teleported was a whole car.
While it's not exactly a limitation, Lyra snaps her fingers whenever she displaces an object. It helps her focus on when exactly she activates her power and the effects take hold. It is a result of her training and over the years it has become something of a mental crutch. While it is possible for her to use her powers without the gesture, she finds it a little more difficult and somewhat unpredictable.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
Most of Lyra's side-effects involve tremendous headaches, fatigue, and occasional blackouts if she ever extends her ability too far. These are more likely to appear if she moves larger objects or if she displaces a great number of objects repeatedly with little to no rest between each. The severity of these effects can last for hours or even days of she's really foolish.
In her more emotional moments, particularly if she's sad or angry, Lyra has the tendency to teleport herself away or others near her away almost unconsciously. This has developed into a defense mechanism she utilizes in times of great stress and can make it extraordinarily difficult to assuage her mood. It has put some tension on relationships she's made in the past.
Even if it's not blatant Lyra has a repressed but ever-present fear for her power making a mistake. There is alway the risk for her power to go a little haywire and possibly mesh two object together upon the end of her teleportation ability. While it may be small, it's still a risk that looms over her each and every time.♦ THE CHARACTER ♦
HEIGHT: 5'6"
HAIR COLOR: Brown
EYE COLOR: Brown
MISC: Comfortable, plain but fitting. This is all you really need to know about Lyra's style.
PERSONALITY: Lyra can be sweet. She can also be a witch. Overall Lyra can be a lot of things.
To the uninformed general public she usually has the reputation for being the polite but fiery librarian and nurse inside BA. It's easy for her to greet others with a charming smile, but cross her once and it will just as easily slide off. She's only tolerate to a degree, and anywhere past that she can be downright nasty. Insulting or injuring her friends is essentially asking for a death sentence, and she can carry it out any way she wishes. Snarky and silver-tongued, she knows how to tread the delicate line between being bludgeoningly blunt and delightfully deceptive.
To those she labels as friends and accepted family, she can actually be tender. While the sarcastic and fiery side of her doesn't vanish in anyway, Lyra at least shows some degree of sincere concern over a person's general well-being. It may come in the form of fierce scolding. It might come in the form of warm hugs. Whatever the case she does show a soft side and honestly trusts those she holds near and dear to her heart.
Just never ask to borrow money from her.
SECRET(S): Lyra could be a modern day dragon. She is a stingy, greedy little thing that saves up practically every penny she makes. The best way to get her attention is to involve some sort of cash- just try mentioning the word "free" around her. It is a sign of true friendship if she ever spends more than a dime on someone for a gift or a treat. Having her pay for lunch is considered the transition from "friend" to "actual friend."♦ THE HISTORY ♦
Lyra had a very interesting childhood. But interesting does not always equate to "good."
She was born out of the union between a woman and a man already married. Not just any man though; he was a rather high-up politician who couldn't afford to let this tryst come to the light. But of course he could afford for the tryst to have happened in the first place, but that's neither here nor there. As a result, Lyra and her twin brother Liam were born to one Nerissa Blackwalde. Who immediately took them away from their father at his kind insistence.
Lyra would have spent all her time with her mother if not for her mother's unfortunate early death when Lyra was only starting into her adolescence. With this news, Lyra's father finally stepped out of the shadows and back into her life to adopt her and Liam into his household. However it was not a particularly happy arrangement, and she got along very poorly with the legitimate children of her father. All in all it wasn't a good idea and everyone should've seen that coming from a mile away. Lyra and Liam became the odd men out but that suited them just fine. They stayed to themselves and cared for themselves. It wasn't until they were 16 that Fate finally gave them a little nudge.
Both twins were already making plans to leave their father's house. It was more of a shelter than a true home. However one day Lyra found that quite suddenly she could teleport things. Like, say, one of her obnoxious half-brothers. Into the basement. Needless to say, it surprised everyone involved. While it would have come with heavy consequences from her estranged "family," Lyra and Liam were saved by the swift arrival of the recruiters. They came the very next day and found no argument from either side about the twins moving out. After that Lyra was off to Bellefonte Academy.
Life in the Academy was a breath of fresh air Lyra sorely needed. She could actually have friends! Real friends! Not stuck-up rich kids friends who only cared about how much your clothes costed. That didn't mean everyone at the academy was an angel, but there were certainly enough to make Lyra happy she ditched her father's abode. In high school and college she thrived. Especially when it came to her powers. Maybe not initially for some deep desire to utilize it much, but all her extensive training paid off. Lyra was a hard worker who eventually decided to give back to the academy that had pretty much saved her and her twin from an uncomfortable setting. After going through a breakneck medical program she got her degree to be a nurse and returned to the school to work part-time as a nurse there, and full-time as a librarian. Adoring reading, it was an easy way for her to do what she loved and what she was trained for♦ THE PLAYER ♦
