Cora Melisandre James
FACE CLAIM: Alejandra Alonso.
♦ THE BASICS ♦
AGE: 19.
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Heterosexual
POSITION: College Student @ Bellefonte Academy♦ THE ABILITY ♦
POWER: Force-Field Generation
Cora has the ability to mentally create, project and shape fields of manipulated energy. She is able to create shields and barriers, walls or fields to protect herself, or others. The force-fields are a type of energy construct created out of particles that usually take the form of a flat wall or a sphere/dome made out of clear energy. These force-fields are see-through, though has an almost shimmering property to them - almost like a slight ripple in the air, which prevents them from being completely invisible.
Cora can change the form of the force fields, but this takes a lot more energy than having it be naturally spherical or as a flat wall. She can direct them at herself, or others, and use it as a cover/shield that can take a certain degree of damage.
These force field barriers aren't impenetrable and can be removed or broken through by an energy drain, extreme weight or if someone has the ability to mentally shield, block or remove them - she would not be able to stop a speeding car, or anything similar to that kind of force. This form of energy is without mass, but still acts like a wall, which means that people or objects affected by it will be unable to pass through. Cora can use these barriers to prevent people from leaving or entering as well as creating a bubble for breathing where one normally can't, such as underwater, around toxic gas, though, prolonged use of airtight barriers will cause asphyxiation.
It takes a lot of focus in order for Cora to sustain these barriers, and they can be disrupted by distracting her, though there has been instances where she has blocked someone's path when angered or distressed. Her ability has in some cases been used by her emotions, though that's only in extreme cases.
The bigger and stronger the barriers/walls/bubbles are, the more energy it drains, and the more focus it needs. The bigger the size, the easier and quicker she will get tired and exhausted too.
LIMITATIONS:
- She is limited to size, shape and how long the barriers last, all depending on how well rested she is and how long it has been since she has slept. She can make the barriers last for about an hour, possibly two if she is fully rested. If she make them bigger, they will last a shorter amount of time, and she will get drained of energy quicker.
- She is also limited to range, and cannot create barriers further than 50 feet away, and that's on a good day. She prefers sticking to around 15-20 feet, because it takes less effort.
- If Cora is under some form of stress, the barriers will become weaker and easier to break through, and attacks on them might cause damage to both her body and her mind.
- People with abilities that can block/remove/break through mental barriers will have an easier time removing her barriers.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
- This power often leads to insomnia, mental and physical exhaustion.
- Headaches that can develop into migraines and nosebleeds, mental and physical exhaustion.
- Cora has to focus and concentrate a lot to both maintain and create her barriers/force-fields/bubbles/shields, and this can result in headaches, energy drain, migraines, muscle pains, temporarily loss of sensory functions.
♦ THE CHARACTER ♦
HEIGHT: 5 ft 10.
HAIR COLOR: Warm brown.
EYE COLOR: Green.
MISC: Cora is most often seen in loose tank tops, sports bras and tights. More often bright and colorful, she does also have a slight tendency to go for darker shades when it comes to jeans and "fancier" clothing. Her wavy hair is often worn loose and she rarely keeps it longer than a little beyond her shoulders for easier maintenance.
Her face is covered in light, barely visible freckles that gives her face a playful edge to it. Her eyes are her most distinctive feature and though she wears little makeup, she usually makes sure her eyes are the first thing people notice, either by making them pop or by wearing colors that compliments them.
Because of her height, Cora usually wears flat shoes and sneakers and tries her best to stay away from heels. Cora also loves wearing colorful bracelets, rings and necklaces, but doesn't particularly enjoy having anything in her ears.
PERSONALITY: For the most part, Cora is a fun-loving, usually happy and courageous young woman. She can appear a tad reckless to some, though she would likely make an excuse by claiming that she's only young once. Cora isn't the kind of person who grows dependent of others and though she does make friends and has plenty of flings, she doesn't enjoy being tied down by anyone, be it a significant other or a friendship. She very much enjoys being free to make the most of her life.
With that said, Cora is also blunt and doesn't believe in sugar coating anything. She might appear inconsiderate to some, though it's really less that and more her being care-free and spontaneous. Cora enjoys spending time outside and doesn't like being cooped up for long amounts of time. She enjoys being active such as working out and moving about and being still can easily make her feel both restless and agitated.
Cora loves being around and meeting new people. The larger the crowd, the better it is. She's a huge flirt who does what she wants, where she wants and when she wants. She's extremely competitive and is a sore loser to the worst degree. However, she still enjoys finding people who challenge and push her. She's the kind of person who is likely to have more frenemies than friends.
When it comes to her love for sports, the more extreme it is, the more fun she'll have. The same thing goes with physical sports. She might not be the strongest or the fastest, but quick wits usually gets her a long way.
SECRET(S): Despite her usually happy and fun-loving attitude, Cora is actually afraid of getting her heart broken, either by friends or a loved one. She craves attention and doesn't like being ignored. It's much easier for her to turn a cold shoulder than admit to being hurt.♦ THE HISTORY ♦
Born outside of Dublin, Ireland, Cora spent most of her childhood in Oxford, England. Her parents split up when Cora was just over one year old and her paternal mother moved from Dublin to America, where she now resides in a trailer park with Cora's half siblings, whom she has next to no contact with. When Cora was three years old, her father remarried and the new couple took Cora with them and moved to Oxford, to Cora's new childhood home. Her grandparents on her father's side still lived in Ireland, so Cora spent most of her holidays there.
Despite her paternal mother's absence, Cora had a steady childhood. She was loved and taken care of and lacked very little in life. Her love for sports became apparent even at an early age, to her father's great pleasure. Gymnastics and swimming were her all time favorite sports, though, she was never one to back out of a challenge. Cora tried various sports over the years and her gymnastics eventually evolved into an interest for parkour.
At the age of fourteen, Cora's powers manifested. Thankfully, her father was a mutant, so it didn't come as much of a shock to her or her family as it likely would have had her father left her in the dark about his past. Although she hadn't expected powers of her own, it came as something of a pleasant, albeit confusing surprise. It took the recruiters a little over a week to show up and off she went, to St. Bethany's.
Because of her so new introduction to her own power, Cora had a tough time trying to cope with it all. Of course, having powers was cool enough on its own, but getting used to being a mutant wasn't all that easy. At least, not during the first couple of months. However, as time passed and Cora eventually came to terms with being so far away from her family and having a whole new life to look forward to, she eventually started to grow into her powers and embracing them. Sort of.
Cora's love for sports and competition got her into trouble more often than not. Not because she was rude or got into fights, but simply because she took every opportunity she could to show herself off. Which usually meant getting involved with pranks and bending the rules.
Detentions came and went and Cora eventually grew older, though not a whole lot more mature over the years. She eventually enrolled into college, studying law enforcement.
It was right around the start of the new semester, January 2017, that Cora decided to transfer to Bellefonte Academy. Partly in hope of meeting her sister, but also because she desired a change of scenery and being transferred was a perfectly excuse for doing just that.♦ THE PLAYER ♦
