Toby leaned on the counter, staring down the clerk on the other side. "Yes, I'm serious," he repeated, making sure to put some emphasis on each word. "I need to know how much it would cost to buy," he pulled out his phone, tapping through it, "seven swans, ideally swimming, six geese of a laying age, four calling birds, and no, I have no idea what that means, three French hens, two turtle doves," Toby paused and scrolled down a little, "and a partridge. Don't worry, I already got the pear tree down."
Toby paused then, tapping his fingers and looking at the clerk. "It's a school assignment from a math teacher who thinks they're being clever," he said, his voice flat. "And yes, I've got a lot of it down, but they said there was extra credit if we managed to find the local prices for all this and--hey!" Toby turned, seeing someone who looked to be studying bird cages and seemed vaguely familiar. "Are you from Bellefonte? Did you get the crazy math project too? Because I'm willing to compare notes at this point."
