Backpacks were heavier than Evie remembered. This blue one had been sitting in the corner of her room for so long that she'd forgotten it was even meant to be carried, yet here she was with all of her worldly possessions either in her hands or on her back. Her mother had sent her away, choosing the danger she knew rather than face the danger that neither she nor Evie fully understood. Evie, of course, found all of this to be abominable, but it was better to be in a place she was welcome than the home where she was unwanted.
Evie couldn't say she believed in fate, but her outburst - the recruiters referred to it as a "manifestation" - had saved her from a life of begging for money on street corners. Her head tilted down to re-examine the papers in her hand before turning up to check the room number on the door before her. The sweeping grounds of the Academy seemed to Evie too nice and large to be a sanctuary for a group as persecuted and invisible as mutant-kind, yet here she stood, on the precipice of a new life. Each step was laborious, and Evie's heart began racing as anxiety set in. The school had provided ear protection when it became obvious that her abilities came at the cost of her hearing, but Evie had not tested them extensively...
Although Evie tried to comfort herself with the knowledge that Bellefonte was a safe space, her hand was practically shaking as she knocked on the door. With bated breath, Evie prepared for the door to open and the mere sound of her new roommate to overwhelm her senses (if she wasn't laughed off in the first place.
But the door opened and Evie's heart skipped a beat with anticipation.
"H-hi. My name's Evie... I'm supposed to be moving in today...?"
