Here's the low down:
That's right, Ladies and Gents...James. Had. Sex!
For those of you who know, James is an emotionally stunted dream walker and manipulator. He suffers from symptoms of schizophrenia and struggles day to day just trying to understand and convey the same emotional spectrum that everyone else can convey so easily. He isn't expressive, he's blunt and sort of a tough nut to crack when it comes to how he feels because he genuinely can't understand what he's supposed to feel. For those he's close to, he cares, he'll even go out of his way for a handful of people, but he needs incentive and most of the people he's interacted with don't offer him incentive.
There's two ways I've thought about approaching this.
1. A one-night stand four years ago that didn't have any emotional connection and just happened to be a mistake that led to a baby boy. This would cause some strain between the three involved because James wouldn't be able to say he cared for the mother and in turn would probably result in a struggle for him to care for her child, even if it is his, too. It'd be a messy situation, that led to a lot of frustration on all sides and would also kind of be detrimental to the child's childhood, which would be sad.
2. A relationship, or the form of one that led to sex and led to pregnancy. In this situation, James would have felt connected and very attached to the mother. He would have even gone to say that he loved her in the best way that he could. However, the way he loves is not the same as everyone else. He'd have had trouble showing how much he cared and how hard he was trying to be good for her. So for her not to see the effort he put in, after she realizes she's pregnant, could stir up a panic within her. She'd fear that James was not capable of loving anyone or caring for a child. That would have caused her to leave.
*if she's a mutant, we could discuss how she could have avoided James and how she would have disappeared from his life i.e a transfer to another school or dropping out because she already had enough credits/had control of her ability.
My preference is the second, just to explore the heartbreak of what James would have felt and how it would lead to his cynicism, however, I am very open to the first as well!

Personality: Up to you! Obviously she'd need to be tolerant of someone who struggles with emotional connection, but they would have had one in some regard. James would probably go for a girl who's smart, can hold her own in wit. She'd have been one of his muses for photography for sure! Other than that, it's pretty open.
History: Completely open. Give her whatever background you can imagine!
