Toby nodded. "more or less. It's, well, there's a whole section of the world that's not getting covered too well right now. Somebody's got to tell our stories. Though I wouldn't be surprised to find out there's already someone's vlog or channel doing it or something," Toby shrugged. It sounded like something someone somewhere would manage to do. He hadn't looked around all that much, but it just struck him as being entirely possible.
Having two people babysitting baby mutants struck Toby as a good idea. He nodded along with Tallulah's assessment. They probably needed at least a few mutants to stay behind and stop all the kiddies from killing themselves after all. It just struck Toby as, again, another sane idea and all.
"Cooking's something that always struck me as definitely learnable," Toby offered. "like, if you love it, then you should be able to learn it. Pick something you love or whatever," he added a shrug. Soon after that, he was gesturing for her to take the lead. "Hadn't really planned on anything in particular. Wherever you want to go is fine by me. I'm sure there was a plan, but..." Toby held up his hands in defeat. "Totally forgot it. Probably had something to do with meeting a cool person in the hall or whatever."

Tallulah could argue there were many part of the world that didn’t get the proper coverage it deserved but she understood his passion lied with mutants. If he wanted to be the one sharing their side of the story, she could hardly go against him. She didn’t see it as a bad thing. “There’s nothing wrong in being the second person to tell the life of mutants,” she pointed out as he argued he may not be the first to do it after all. Most journalists wrote about stuff other wrote before or shared the same story. It was the way they brought it up that made the difference.
She laughed a bit at the way he talked of cooking. “I’d say even if you don’t love it you should learn it. At least the basics. Unless you want to feed only on microwave meals. But if you love something, you should go as far as you can in it,” she agreed with a nod. To her, the pleasure she had in cooking had more to do with serving people meals than play with the food and experiment with flavours. All she wanted was people to be happy to have a meal. She didn’t want to do something complicated. Maybe she wouldn’t earn culinary stars or get her own cooking show and books, but she’d be happy with her life and that was the most important.
Meeting a cool person in the hall? She laughed at that. “I thought we agreed we were nerds. Not sure nerd and cool mix well. Unless there was another person you wanted to meet. I don’t know you well, maybe hallways are the place you meet with everyone.” Okay, technically they didn’t meet in the hallway, but she preferred to say they did. She shook her head. “Had nothing much to do either. Had it not been for this strange encounter with a turtle guy, I think I’d be in my room watching videos right now.” She gave him a little smile, a tad hesitant. She was not the best at banter, she never really had the occasion to do so, so she was not sure her comment was good or offensive. She didn’t want it to be offensive.
"Technically I'd be about the fourth, what with Stan Lee and Joss Whedon and all," Toby just had to point out, adding a slight shrug. He did think it was almost uncanny how close the comics had been to real life, but he didn't want to quite go into the various theories he had about all that (including a few that pegged Lee and Whedon as not so secret mutants). Thankfully Toby didn't have to dwell overmuch on the mutant thing, as the conversation naturally turned to cooking.
"I can put a pot on the stove and work it," he offered. "It's not exactly rocket science. I mean," he held up his hand, "the basics. obviously the advanced stuff takes years of training. You know what really tastes good? Foot. I should know, I'm munching on some right now," he winced a little, but he was pretty sure that he got his point across.
At least he could try further salvaging with the next bit:
"Ah, but you can be a nerd and be cool. That's something modern television has taught us, and everyone knows that television is the primary source of educating in the American household." Toby nodded. "And what sort of videos? Nothing too kinky, I'd hope."

Tallulah arched an eyebrow up. Those names, although meaning nothing to her, actually sounded a bit familiar. She must have heard them or seen them somewhere without paying too much attention. But she couldn’t say she ever read anything about mutants. Were they writers? They were talking about a blog, or a vlog, so it was possible. She preferred not to ask, in case it was another one of those moments where she really should know something yet did not. She had enough of people not getting how she couldn’t name one One Direction song didn't know who this actress was. She bet they had no idea who Hiroki Narimiya was and couldn’t name one Hey!Say!Jump song. Pointing that out rarely helped her though.
She had a smile at his culinary talents, trying not to laugh. “Most of it isn’t. It’s not like I want it to be complicated. The simple meals are very good too.” Again, she had no fancy ideas here. She didn’t want to be a prestigious chef, just a good one who cooked for people who just wanted a good meal. When he brought up foot, she had to frown and wonder what was up with him. She even began looking for recipes that could have some foot but all she thought about was pig’s feet and if someone ate that, she didn’t want to know. Luckily, puzzled and concerned state he put her in was quickly gone as he explained what he meant and she laughed as she finally understood what the foot was about. “I don’t know, I’d say you were doing fine. You could do a lot worse.”
At the mention of television, Tallulah had to shrug. “Don’t watch it much, to be honest,” she admitted. But with all the movies about superheroes there have been in the past years, she was not all that surprised to find out nerds were slowly getting rid of their image as the ones with broken glasses fixed with tape and the head plunged in the toilet. She laughed again, although this time with some embarrassment. “If I would, I wouldn’t tell you, right?” Kinky videos, her? Wouldn’t the school put a program to prevent that on their laptop anyway? Some sort of parental control. It was probably easy to take off, not like Tallulah would have cared much to check. She shook her head. “I... I like watching dramas. Like, Asian ones?” she was hesitant as this was not exactly the thing she bragged the most about. She gave him an embarrassed smile after this confession. “I’m weird uh?”
"Simple works," Toby offered, shrugging again. "It's whatever makes you find your zen or whatever," which was a pretty good life philosophy, he supposed. Toby did think that people should do some of the basics: find something in life that benefits others, use what they had, stuff like that, but there should be a sort of zen like center at the end. Maybe that was why he was doing alright in the end? Or at least enough for Tallulah to essentially say as much.
The television bit had him flinching. "you have got to catch up," he insisted, shaking his head. "There's just too much good stuff out there, and it's really connecting more and more with our lives, seeing as we're about three steps away from being in a CW drama or something ourselves," he had to smirk at that, picturing himself in one of those. Clearly he'd be a super-charming nerd character who knew too much about what was going on and was the comic relief. Suited him well enough.
"Who am I to say whether you would or wouldn't?" Toby asked, shrugging. "Maybe that's your thing, we did meet in a bathroom after all. Though, judging by your reactions... probably--" he paused as Tallulah continued, his brow soon crinkling.
"You mean, like, Korean dramas? Because those can get all kinds of insane. Same with some of the Japanese ones, but I always kinda dug the Korean ones more," he smirked, "too much time on my hands. No sleep. Much watching of the TV," another pause, 'and you thought you were weird? Ha! Your weirdness pales in comparison to the utter oddity which is Toby Chastain!" Which of course required a pause and hands thrust onto the hips, because.

“My… zen? Interesting way to put it,” She never thought about cooking being her way to find some sort of peace of mind, but she supposed it did, in a way. It was a hobby and a passion at the same time, so it ought to make her feel good. If a hobby stressed you out, you really needed to find something else. Talking with Toby really brought a few things under a new light.
She flinched as well, thanks to his response. Catching up? She probably should, if only to fit in by knowing a few more shows everyone else is watching. “Not sure I want to be part of a drama,” she objected. Since TV shows loved to torture their characters, she certainly didn't want to. She was probably too insignificant, but that only made it more dangerous. They could just get rid of her then without a second thought and who knows how that would translate in real life. “I do watch some, but, maybe, not a lot and not like every week.” That sounded lame even among other lame excuses. But it was still the truth. For shows everyone was watching, that is. Somehow, she doubted they were all making a Ouran High School Host Club marathon. Not that it would last long, with only eleven episodes. And a movie. Unless they also wanted to watch the anime...
At first, when he talked about him not judging her if she watched kinky stuff on the internet, she thought he was serious and started feeling embarrassed about it. “No, I don’t-- You’re joking right?” she said as she realised her mistake. He had to. Compared to that, saying she loved Asian dramas didn’t sound that bad at all. He jumped straight to Korean dramas however. “I’m more into Japanese ones myself,” she admitted, almost sounding sorry after he claimed preferring the Korean ones. “But I’ve watched some Korean ones too. Like City Hunter or Dramaworld. Really loved that one.” Should she be surprised, with a plain American girl as the lead? This drama was her life, really.
“No sleep? I kind of do something like that, to be honest,” she admitted, although unaware how unlike him she actually did it. She laughed as he tried to show how she was not weird compared to him. “Let’s say we’re equally weird then. Unless singing along the theme song is beyond you, than I win.” She said it with actual amusement. She was not as embarrassed anymore, with the way he talked of it.

Toby just chuckled as Tallulah protested being part of a drama. Oh, he was so tempted to point out that life, especially teenage life, especially teenage life at a boarding school, especially teenage life at a boarding school for mutants, was pretty much guaranteed to have some drama attached to it. But he could tell she was still going through some things and all, and the conversation had taken such a pleasant tone.
There was even pausing. "Nope," Toby said, shrugging. "I got bored one week and spent my entire time watching Korean dramas. I can actually hold my own in a conversation in Korean now, particularly if we're talking about love triangles or evil twins or something," that had Toby smirking. He'd actually tried this with a poor international student; confused the hell out of them, but it had still been an enjoyable experience.
Well, enjoyable for Toby, anyway.
"You should totally make me watch the good Japanese ones sometime," Toby said, head bobbing. "Though obviously I am incapable of not talking when something like that's happening," he chuckled, before reaching up to rub his head. "Hmm, well, my power is literally to not sleep or eat, so I kinda got a leg up on the weirdness. I could probably sing several theme songs, though I think I only know one or two in Korean or Japanese," he paused, tilting his head. "Does 'Head Cha La' count? Because I think that's mandatory for anyone who wants to call themselves a nerd these days."

Tallulah considered she had gone through enough in life already not to add a drama plot to it all. She couldn’t blame those whose life they found boring to wish some more action into it but she herself would have been content with that kind of life. If making a friend by walking in the wrong restroom was the weirdest that could happen to her, she’d be very happy of it.
She laughed about his conversation topics. “You’re better than me then. I can plead you and thank you and I know every way they say hello but I’m not that good for the rest. If there are no subtitles, I doubt I would understand a thing they say.” Maybe she should pay better attention, or take a quick lesson or something. There must be books to help you learn Japanese quickly, like for travels or something. Maybe she could find one in a bookstore. “I never had a computer before I came here. Not one that was mine, I mean. And I didn’t go out a lot so I ended up looking at videos on YouTube, and from there I found some Japanese dramas and looked for more and found sites that offered them...” she explained, not finishing her sentence as she assumed he could guess the rest.
She was surprised to hear him say he wanted to watch some Japanese ones. More than that, he relied on her to find some good ones for him. “It depends what you like to watch. I can try finding you some about love triangles and evil twins, like this you’ll be able to talk of this in yet another language,” she teased. She actually didn’t watch that many with love triangles, oddly enough, and couldn’t recall seeing any twins, other than in Ouran High School Host Club and if they were devilish, she wouldn’t say they were evil.
She then seemed to realise he was suggesting they watched it together. Why else would he mention talking? “You mean, together?” she said, pointing a finger at him before pointing it at herself. She never expected that. She stared at him, surprised yet again as he mentioned what she supposed was his power. He didn’t need to eat or sleep? She had no idea there was such a power. “Well, if you want to talk of legs, I’ve got a prosthetic one, so maybe your power beats mine but I think this evens things on the weird level,” she said, with a little smile. She never thought she could have fun figuring out which one was the weirdest, or battle to be the winner.
She felt bad again when he mentioned a song, claiming nerds had to know it. She did not. “What?” She shook her head. Why every time she could find something that could make her relate to someone, there was immediately something else that separated them?

"I still sound like someone's paranoid idiot brother," Toby said, shrugging. he hadn't actually tried to converse with someone besides a few times, and most of those conversation had ended in laughter. Then again, considering that Toby was involved, that was pretty much normal overall.
It did sadden him slightly to hear that the girl didn't have a computer before coming here but, well, that did happen from time to time. Made him appreciate his own perfectly normal background a little more and all. The only real weirdness in his family, beyond some affiliation for nerdy things, was the mutant child who didn't need to sleep or eat. He was name was Toby, and at least they still acted like h was part of the family.
"Works for me," he said, nodding. "I mean, it doesn't necessarily have to be about those subjects, but if you're gonna find them anyway," Toby shrugged. He waited while she did the finger thing, nodding. "Yes, together. I mean, assuming you want to and all. I'm not trying to ask you out or anything if that's the worry. It would be a little weird, given where we met," he waved toward the bathroom. "Pretty sure that would make me a pervert of some kind."
He paused at the leg thing, shrugging. Why go into that and all? The last though: "Oh c'mon!" Toby waited. "CHA-LA! HEAD-CHA-LA!" he began singing/shouting, complete with arms raised. "Nani ga okite mo kibun wa heno-heno kappa!" A slight pause and then: "CHA-LA, HEAD-CHA-LA! Mune ga pachi-pachi suro hoo. Sawaaaaaagu. Genki-dama... SPARKING!" And his arms were raised in what amounted to "spirit fingers."

Tallulah understood what he meant. Maybe not the paranoid part, but that was probably about another part of his personality she had yet seen. People could say whatever they wanted about the geeks and nerds who’d run the world later, in high school, they didn’t rule anything. At best were they ignored by the rest of the students, which wasn’t that surprising as students tended to ignore anyone not being part of their group of friends. Tallulah knew she preferred to be ignored than noticed by those people. It was usually followed with questions about her leg that she’d rather avoid. Or comments about her being rather poor. Although she didn’t get that much here, since it was easier to brush that fact over with people who never knew her before.
“Well, the only one I have in mind about love triangle right now is Last Cinderella, which is kind of fun. And twins... other than the ones in Ouran, I don’t know. And it’s more like two mischievous devils than a good and an evil twin,” she said as she went through the dramas she had watched and those on her list to see. She didn’t remember any mention about twins, but it could be something they skipped.
Toby confirmed he meant the two of them, but was quick to explain this was not a date. He then had to remind her how they met. She looked back at the bathroom they left behind. “Pretty sure I’d be the pervert one, since it was the men’s room.” And so she was glad they wouldn’t imply they were flirting or trying to score a date. “I’m fine with it. I don’t really know what kind of story you like but I can come up with something. Japanese dramas only have about ten or eleven episodes, so it’s easy to get through one when you have the time.”
She startled at his exclamation. Was it really that strange she didn't know the song? Apparently, it was. And Toby wanted to educate her, shouting the song, causing anyone in the hallway to stop and stare at the weird guy singing in some weird language. She was kind of amazed about this. It was more due to how loudly he sang regardless of the stares than his vocal talent, but she was still impressed. Sadly for him, she shook her head. “Is it from an anime? I’ve never watch a lot of anime. Except maybe Sailor Moon when I was a kid,” she explained sorry for real this time that she had to say that. He put so much energy into it that it was entertaining.

Toby didn't immediately recognize the title Tallulah threw out at him; well, Ouran sounded vaguely familiar and all, but nothing that immediately struck a chord with him. Didn't really matter, as they were already moving on to arranging things, and that whole far more important theme song business. Which Toby could still not quite believe that someone who was a nerd hadn't at least heard.
"Okay," Toby said, lowering his arms (they'd been upraised in spirit fingers position for a while), "clearly we're going to need to have at least two nights. one where you pick your personal favorite Asian drama and we marathon our way through most of that. And one night where I introduce you to the wonderful world of DragonBall," Toby moved over to put an arm around Tallulah's shoulder then, while his other hand gestured grandly, as if indicating an impressive vista they should both be taking in.
"Honestly, I don't know how you lasted so long without exposure," he said, looking over at her. "And Sailor Moon definitely counts for anime. Also awesome. But that would take even longer. Heck, it'll take us at least a week of marathoning to get through part of DragonBall Z, and we're probably gonna stick mostly with the better sagas..." the gesturing hand was now stroking his chin. "So many decisions to make..."
Post by Tallulah Wright on Jan 24, 2017 3:17:40 GMT
Toby put so much enthusiasm in his song, causing, no doubt, a few heads to turn and look at them, or lift in the air wondering who the hell that was, yet Tallulah had to disappoint her. She didn’t know the song. She could argue that there were many songs she could sing that he wouldn’t know but she had no idea which live actions she watched that was the most popular. Besides, she didn’t know all of their theme songs, only those sung by bands she liked.
This disappointment resulted in two nights to spend watching shows. She didn’t expect that. “Oh, Dragon Ball. I’ve heard of that,” she let out. She heard, but she could hardly say she ever watched it. She couldn’t even say what it was about exactly. She would have to check, so she wouldn’t embarrass herself too much next time, despite the fact she was certain Toby would forget about those two planned nights and they would never happen. She was rather amused by the way he acted, and tried not to laugh. One thing for sure, he was fine with people finding him weird, that really didn't stop him from being himself. She should do like him a little more.
She nodded about Sailor Moon. “They did make a live action but I didn’t survive through the first episode. I chose to keep my childhood memories intact instead.” Did they make one about Dragon Ball? Maybe she could check that too. Wouldn’t that be funny if she found it and showed it to him? “Dragon Ball Z? Oh I see, they made several...” Sailor Moon had that too, but Tallulah grew out of it and didn’t watch those other sagas. One thing she loved about the Asian dramas was that they usually lasted one season. You didn’t have time to get tired of it. She looked at him and his pensive state. Was he really serious about those marathons? It looked that way. “You do the thinking and then we try to find a date,” she offered. Like this, it was on him. If he chose to forget about it or not to have it after all, she would be fine with it. A little sad, but she didn’t want to force him.
